- Peer-to-peer digital fundraising platforms are becoming more popular way of people to reach a broader social and contribution network beyond their immediate family and friends. Kenya has a long tradition of communal fundraising called harambees (Swahili for "all pull together").
- As technology becomes ever more central to contribution relationships, understanding the drivers of traditional giving among low-income populations is a first step toward designing better digital fundraising solutions. If technology can maintain the core elements that have traditionally driven use while reducing costs and expanding networks, it can deliver products that meet people’s needs and are actively used.
- It is with this in mind that we have come up with Changia app as a solution of the same.
- Changia solutions is a an end to end encrypted social and contribution management platform that enables members to contribute as a group and manage their contributions within the group right from their mobile phone.
- For a long time, groups have been looking for ways of having a common integrated platform which constitutes both chat and contribution aspect.
- Previously, users have been using different platforms for chatting/socializing and updating contributions done from a different platform of contributions which is a tedious and long process. In addition, some of the challenges they have experienced are; difficulty in reconciliation of contributions, lack of transparency in the groups, mismanagement of contributions and many more.

1. What is changia?
Changia is a an end to end encrypted social and contribution management platform that enables members to contribute as a group and manage their contributions within the group right from their mobile phones.

2. How does changia work?
• All participants are asked to download Changia App from Google play store.
• One member will act as a group admin by creating a group and selecting the intended members of the group.
• Once the group has been set up, each member will be able to make their contributions for the intended cause.
• Once the treasure/admin and members are satisfied with the contributions made, the treasurer will then be able to withdraw or select a member who is given the rights to withdraw the contributions either to their bank or MPesa account. -
3. What can the group members changia for?
Members can raise contributions for different causes such as; chamas/ merry-go-rounds, church fundraisings, school fundraising, medical harambees, baby showers, bridal showers, funeral committees etc.

4. How safe is group contributions in changia app?
We combine the latest end to end encrypted technology, well-equipped developers and high level operations team to ensure contributions raised on Changia are safe. The group contributions can be accessed at any given time through the admin/treasure or person the treasure assigns.

5. Are there any deadlines or time limits?
Changia app is coming to digitize the old way of running chamas/ fundraising. So long as a chama/ fundraising groups is active there are no deadlines or time limits for the same.

6. How do i make contributions within a Changia group?
Once you have installed the changia app and joined a group there is a tab for “make contributions” which is displayed on top of the application. Upon clicking on the tab, you will be redirected to a payment platform whereby you can make your contributions via MPesa or your bank account. Each contribution Members make in their respective groups is automatically displayed in the statement therefore bringing the aspect of accountability and eases reconciliation.
PLEASE NOTE: The treasure will still remain the king. -
7. As a member how do I get to know whether other members have contributed?
All members will be able to view the group contribution statements in real time.

8. What is the limit of the members in a group?
Currently, there is no participants limit within the groups. An admin can add as many members as need be.

9. What are the charges involved in making a withdrawal and deposit within the Changia App?
There are two costs associated to your Changia group contributions there is the One off fundraisers such as medical harambees, bridal shower, funerals, birthdays etc., Periodic fundraises such as Monthly Chamas and merry-go- rounds, church fundraisings etc. and Withdrawal Fees. The one off fundraisers will be charged upto 1% and the periodic fundraises will be charged upto 1% per contribution made within the group. There will be applicable statutory MPesa and bank charges depending with the platform a group chooses to withdraw. There are no charges for depositing contributions in the Changia app.
